The original 2001 Meteor Garden was such a phenomenon in Malaysia I remember girls in my school even bought those tacky replicas of the meteor necklace famously adorned on leading lady Shan Cai’s neck. The show opens with four guys (and let’s not forget their signature long, billowing mane) studying at a university for the affluent. Led by the handsome but spoilt Dao Ming Si, the group – collectively known as F4 – walks the university grounds as if they own them, getting students expelled if they so much as step on their toes. In walks Shan Cai, a strong-willed student who comes from a family of little means. She decides to stand up against Dao Ming Si’s antagonistic ways, which causes him to fall for her unexpectedly. Meteor Garden (2018), a remake of the hit Taiwanese series, sticks closely to this storyline, even featuring the same iconic scenes and lines the show is known for.
( Also read: ) Yet – and maybe this is the nostalgia talking – the remake is worlds apart from the original series that stole my heart. First things first, I have issues with the way the female lead Shan Cai (played by Shen Yue) is written. Yes, the character is meant to come across as brash and a little rough around the edges when she talks back at Dao Ming Si. But there is a childishness in the 2018 Shan Cai’s rebuttals; talking back at someone because you’re angry and caught up in the heat of the moment and not because you’re standing up against an injustice, something the original Shan Cai, played by Barbie Hsu, embodied.
Jul 09, 2018 Meteor Garden is the classic love story; rich boy (Dao Ming Si) falls for poor girl (Shan Cai) and obstacles ensue. 24 July 2018| by mz-gigglz18 – See all my reviews. I'm not one to watch something like this but I was hooked by the first episode. Romance and Comedy all in one.
And it doesn’t help her dubbed-over voice is high-pitched and grating. ‘Don’t you dare touch my hair again I just spent three hours and an entire jar of hair product on it.’ Photos: Netflix As the show progresses, Shan Cai’s constant wishy-washiness also gets on my nerves, which brings me to my next point. Perhaps the reason the new Shan Cai is so undecided about how she feels about Dao Ming Si has to do with the length of the remake. There are 48 episodes! The original only had 27. As such, the Shan Cai-Dao Ming Si love story gets dragged on and on, and unless there are plans to include the events of Meteor Garden II (the original show spawned a second season), it won’t be long before this cow is milked dry.
There are so many unnecessary scenes that should’ve been left on the chopping board, and not to mention the liberal use of slow-mo and replays. Having said that, something good does come out of this lavish number of episodes. While staying true to the original storyline, Meteor Garden (2018) fleshes out its characters a lot more compared to the original. For instance, instead of just zooming in on her dalliances, there is some focus on Shan Cai’s academic life (she majors in Nutrition). Meanwhile, Dao Ming Si and the rest of F4 are experts in playing Bridge. These details seem inconsequential at first but gets worked into the storyline pretty nicely.
The remake also delves deeper in its supporting characters’ stories such as Shan Cai’s bestie Li Zhen and Dao Ming Si’s older sister Dao Ming Zhuang. The latter is especially entertaining. Plus, there’s a new man vying for Shan Cai’s heart!
These additions are substantial enough to make the remake worth watching. Speaking of the men in Shan Cai’s life, the new Dao Ming Si, played by Dylan Wang, takes some getting used to at first, but he manages to capture the essence of the role and lend his own unique charm. Elsewhere, production quality has improved leaps and bounds. The remake took RM95mil to make and it shows. The set design, filming locations and wardrobe are all aesthetically-pleasing and expensive-looking, which reflects on many of its characters’ wealthy and powerful background. The original, due to budget constraints, wasn’t as convincing in portraying the lifestyle of the rich.
I was up in arms when I saw the first few episodes of Meteor Garden (2018) mainly because I felt Barbie Hsu’s interpretation of Shan Cai was the only way to go. Yet for some reason I stuck on and found myself hurrying home to catch a new episode.
I guess somewhere along the way, I was able let go of the old and embrace the new. Meteor Garden (2018) is available on Netflix. Winry August 9, 2018 at 5:55 am i agree about shen yue’s somewhat childish interpretation. I also think barbie hsu’s shancai was the closest to its original makino from the manga. For me, no other incarnations of the role has portrayed one of makino’s most defining quality –her spunkiness–as well as barbie hsu had. I think that’s also because in this version, what this new shancai was spouting against daoming si was inherently untrue. Like in that scene where she ridiculed daoming si for being a parasite of society who does not know hard work et cetera which caused daoming si to lose his temper and flung the carton box of food on her.
In this new version of meteor garden, what she said here was just not true. Daoming si and f4 were all outstanding students in this version.
Daoming si even pays for his tuition fee and already earned his first million through the stock market at the age of 18. So all her criticisms against daoming si just rang hallow. And i think that’s one of the problems of this interpretation of daoming si and f4. Shancai was supposed to stand up against this injustice in school, specifically against f4. But in this version, it doesn’t work because f4, daoming si in particular, could hardly be called a tyrant. So i think that important turning point in shancai’s character that deals with her standing up against bullies and oppression was rendered void.
So all her criticisms just sounded like someone who didn’t know what she’s talking about and just wanted to spout nonsense out of spite. But i disagree that this new version was dragging out the story.
I actually liked all those scenes that they included in this version (except the caina storyline, dear lord, those scenes truly tested my patience). It followed the manga quite faithfully and allowed the characters to have a better foundation in their relationship. But i think i understand your annoyance with shancai’s indecisiveness. But for me, it’s not because the scenes are getting repetitive, but more because of the new interpretation of daoming si. For me, shancai’s indecisiveness in the old MG was understandable because of her reservation against daoming si. That original daomingsi was alarmingly violent and a bully.
A lot of the bad things that happened to shancai in the original MG was due partly (sometimes wholly) to daoming si. So despite all the great things that daoming si did for her. His glaring flaws weighed just as heavily. In this version, that dilemma was nonexistent.
This new daoming si was freaking near perfect, so what the f was shancai getting confused and reluctant about? It just doesn’t add up. In any case, despite the differences it had with the manga and original meteor garden, i still enjoy this new version.

Because in the end, they still followed the manga far more closely than any other versions had. And they still managed to portray that love story between daoming si and shancai in a satisfying manner. And yeah, i liked dylan wang’s version, too. Natalie October 9, 2018 at 12:52 am I just finished marathoning Meteor Garden and went back to read posts about it. I really like your comments and I think you have pointed out the differences between version in an articulated way. I’ve never watched the first Taiwanese version, but the Korean and Japanese ones. I must say that while I enjoyed the show and watched it more than once, it’s never really the show on top of my list to rewatch.
Your comments made me understand why. I think because of the violence and bullying, I failed to fantasize about the leading man as a character. It’s romantic that he’s nice to her but ‘he’ is not a very nice guy. However, the 2018 version makes Daoming Si completely lovable, he’s immature and lonely, and only wants to be loved.
He could be violent if there’s a reason to be. Together with Dylan Wang’s personal charms, the story renders the rest a supporting cast (especially Lei). Shancai’s indecisiveness becomes annoying and not a conflict. The reason i didn’t dislike her was because she’s the one Daoming Si likes very much.
Yeah, he threw a lunchbox at her but since he’s been saving her lives and supporting her on every direction. She just plays hard to get for no good reason. In any case, the result is that I love this Daoming Si so much, i can’t wait for Dylan’sproject.
Ice Cold Queen August 9, 2018 at 7:12 am The new meteor garden is quite refreshing to watch. It’s cute and can make your heart flutter once in a while. However, acting wise it’s quite obvious (especially the male and female lead) that both don’t have enough experience. In my humble opinion if the cast were given a few months of acting work shop to get to know more of their character it should have been enough to polish their ‘rough’ acting skills. Nonetheless i would give double thumbs up to the production stuff who were able to put in a beautiful cast. Even with the lot’s of not so good comment on the acting performance, there is an undeniable chemistry between Dylan Wang and Shen Yue. I just hope in the future there will be other ‘good’ projects where these 2 can be paired again.
Yoon August 9, 2018 at 9:31 am I decided to check out this new version of Meteor Garden with the lowest of low expectations and came out surprisingly addicted. I grew up with the original Meteor Garden, having watched that version over twenty times as a kid, and subsequently watched all versions of this story. I am pretty much an expert in HanaDango. Yet, this new version managed to impress me. The cast is young and inexperienced actors but I think that is what made this version so refreshing.
Despite being inexperienced, the cast played their roles well. It wasn’t hard to imagine Dylan as DMS because he is similar to his character in real life. So even with the inexperience, it still felt honest and true to character.
I am 32 episodes in so far. The story initially seemed to breeze by and now it is starting to drag a little. I am still hooked though. Shen Yue is starting to impress me with her difficult emotional scenes. Dylan and Darren settled in to their roles and are now living their characters. My only qualm is the whol CaiNa arch.
I have never felt so angry having to fast forward entire half episodes of a show I am diligently following every week. But she does leave eventually so people don’t fret it ends! Winry August 9, 2018 at 12:07 pm i feel you about the caina arc.
I get it that they need to give meizuo his side story since ximen has xiao you and i’m guessing they’ll follow the manga and explore the story about ximen’s childhood love. But still, this caina story line is taking waaaay too long. Like, come on, teng tang jing and lei only got about four episodes while this girl is getting almost 7-8! I’m betting ximen’s story with his childhood love will be about 2-3 episodes only since the average episodes this version allots for story arcs seems to be only that.
This problem with daoming si and shancai gets dragged on because of those scenes with caina and meizuo taking up too much freaking screen time. And she has absolutely nothing to do with shancai and daoming si at all. Miss B August 10, 2018 at 12:06 am Omg! We are in the same page regarding the Caina scene thing. Im glad im not the only one. I am getting very frustrated every single week with the story dragging. I dont even understand why are they even focusing on her.
So mad that i even forwarded. Hope Caina’s scene ends soon. They should have shorten the episodes and make it short so that the story line is not dragging and dreadful. Nonetheless, i still love the new version and eager to watch it every week( except Caina’s & Terence’s scene). Victoria Quang September 5, 2018 at 1:42 am DUDE. I forwarded through the Caina scenes I kept asking myself ”WHY?!?!” No one cares that she’s in love with someone else and not Mei Ziou. Like come onthat story did not need that much screen time.
The connection piece about He Yuanzi being friends with Caina and hearing about Shan Cai from the cooking competition was also from left field as well and added nothing to the story. If they had scenes that made the three (Caina, Shan Cai, and He Yuanzi) friends, then it would make sense why they’d include that. I loved the new version. I thought overall the acting was much better than the 2001 version and chemistry flowed much better. I did notice that I could not love anyone but Dao Ming Si character in the new one.
In the 2001 version I found myself falling and rooting for both him and Lei. I also found myself a fan of the other 2 characters in 2001but in the new one.it was tough since Dylan’s performance was so great. Jerry Yan will forever be DMS but Dylan did great. Madhumitha August 10, 2018 at 4:50 pm I love this new version!I was a fan of the Korean version, boys over flowers, but this feels so refreshingly new and I am totally hooked on to the characters.
Even though most of the actors are new, I Can feel the sincerity they have dedicated to their roles. Maybe its the setting or the new plotlines, but this feels so different from boys over flowers, in a good way.I have watched some episodes of the old meteor garden and I can feel the difference in character development, while the old Si and Shancai were more mature and outspoken, the new Si and Shancai are both spunky and defiant. And i think this similarity in characters makes them both cute and endearing to watch, and its such a relief to see a love story that eventually takes its time to evolve and bloom, instead of rushing the pace.
I was a bit annoyed with Shancai’s indecisiveness and the ever dragging Caina plotline, but i feel that it’s important to the storyline. Anyway, I’m so whipped into this drama and I wait for its episodes every week, and I truly think this drama proved how efficiently refreshing. And pleasant a remake can be. PS:I might one of the few remaining people who thinks its cute when they argue, cuz it really is and is so much closer to reality.
I also love it when they. Have the simplest of conversations, like the one in the cake shop, it was too cute for uwu heart to survive.
Yasmine August 11, 2018 at 12:26 am I enjoyed this show very much and kept talking to my friend about it all day. There are so many things in it that get so in to the show like the witch of a mother that Daoming Si has and the jealousy between the characters. There was one thing I hated and it was Caina like her storyline was just too long and unnecessary to me so I just ended up skipping her and many people agree with me on that note. OMG that ending got me in tears because 1- so many heartbroken and 2- I thought there were more episodes. Pauline August 11, 2018 at 7:58 am I really love this version. I’m also a big fan of the Taiwanese version but this version is also very promising and has its own charms. It’s very refreshing to be honest.
Not seeing the hard core bullying scenes, F4 being normal students who also attends classes and eats in cafeterias, and that Shan Cai’s parents and Dao Ming Si are not that stupid. I think that the production team has had a hard time bringing the story to life due to China’s strict television rules which bans exaggeration of social problems (like school bulliying) and displays of excess (like riches/wealth). I also think that Dylan Wang is perfect as Dao Ming Si even though he is such a newbie actor. You can definitely see the change of emotions from him in different scenes. There’s also the chemistry between him and Shen Yuen, which is very undeniable.
I just hope people would stop complaining and comparing this version from the Taiwanese version. Just enjoy and appreciate every moment, scene or episode this new version has to offer because it’s really worth watching. August 16, 2018 at 12:16 am Personally, I’ve never seen the Taiwanese version. So I don’t have the same attachments about it as some of the others on here.
But I did watch the original anime Hana Yori Dango and I watched the Korean version Boys over Flowers, and so far, I’m at episode 30 of the new one and I’m completely in looooove. The main character in the Korean version had irritated me endlessly (her bowl cut hair drove me nuts) and I much prefer this portrayal of Shancai.
She has a wholesome quality that I enjoy, but is also fierecely loyal and protective, plus she has great chemistry with our Mr. Pineapple Head. (Which, BTW, I find his hairstyle hilarious and it strangely suits the character’s personality in a way I didn’t even know I needed LOL.) I have complaints, of course, but overall I’m super hooked and I’m enjoying all the cute cheesiness. I especially like that Shancai is taking her time falling for Daoming Si, since he does hit her and attack her, and basically show signs of being an abuser. (The only reason I can overlook those scenes is because I know the author had intended him for the villain when those scenes were written.) Another thing I like about this version is that Dylan was able to make me root for his character, while in the other versions I was always just a little bit more in love with the Rui/Lei/Ji-hoo character haha. In conclusion, I agree that the Caina/Terrence arc was misplaced in this show. Even though I found their story cute it just didn’t belong AT ALL.
And I like how true to the original this version was, even with the retrictions they had to work with. Now if only the rest of the episodes could HURRY UPPPP here in Canada LOL. Mike Yee August 21, 2018 at 4:43 am No show is perfect, and you shouldn’t expect a remake to try to copy the same show and characterizations. In this version, Shancai is more wholesome and innocent and not as spunky as previous versions, but so what? It’s nice to see different re-tellings of the same story. I love this version – it really makes you root for the 2 main lovers and you fall in love with them falling in love.
I love how they prolong that as too many shows rush the emotions of falling in love, and in this retelling, the feeling is prolonged and lingering. The love story is also believable. Shancai’s indecisiveness is also believable because she is portrayed as selfless and innocent. She just doesn’t understand what falling in love means.
She expresses her crush with Lei more openly because it’s “just a crush”, but because she doesn’t understand that she is truly in love with Si, she keeps trying to resist Si. In her mind, she isn’t supposed to be in love with people like Si, but true love isn’t about rationality – it can be irrational. Her head tells her she is supposed to love someone like Lei because there is no conflict with Lei, but her heart belongs to Si even though there is conflict there. Only through the persistence of Si does her head finally understand her heart. I love this kind of emotionally conflicted love story that is difficult and complicated.
August 24, 2018 at 2:16 pm there is nothing special about this series. It could be good as what others say, but not as remarkable and entertaining as the others. The 2001 version, the japanese version, and the korean version were a lot better than this one. This series is really plain.
And the most annoying is the acting skills of the actress who played the lead role. Not the Shancai that the fans of hanayori dango know. Very disappointing. I already stopped watching this. The only good thing that i’ve observed from this is Dylan’s performance. Not as good as Jerry’s and Jun’s, yet, he did quite well.
Jerry’s portrayal was superb. But I must say, Jun’s was amazing too. I thought I was the only one who find this version disappointing, apparently, this series has received a very poor rating in China. Nonetheless, if you juts want to watch a good drama, you could try this one. But as a fan of the manga, the best adaptation is the 2001 version. The japanese comes next.
BOF although entertaining and very luxurious, it lacked something that the first 2 version were able to deliver. LS August 29, 2018 at 11:45 am I realized watching both versions that the 2001 version was a masterpiece due to Barbie’s magnetic acting and the sparseness of the production. Shancai is not an inherently likeable character: she’s self-important enough to spy on people, can’t be honest with how she feels, doesn’t take responsability for her actions, and leads people on (Barbie even called her a green tea). Yet, Barbie was magnetic in her role because, as you said, she captured her spunkiness and her courage for fighting for what’s right.
There’s an organic es in her acting that thoroughly supports the 2001 drama despite various poorly acted scenes by the inexperienced cast. Despite the vastly more polished 2018 production, I feel like the new lead actress just can’t fill in her Shancai. She just pouts when anything goes wrong and goes for a pretty autopilot form of acting that just feels poorly thought out, resulting in a wooden, uninteresting character.
It’s such a waste because I really like Dylan who plays Dao Ming Si with a sincerity and vulnerability that beats the 2001 version. As you said, it doesn’t feel like the heroine is fighting for anything. That makes for a poor ass protagonist in any setting. In my opinion they must have not understood what made Barbie’s Shancai so fitting with the admittedly ridiculous plot and dynamics, and plain hired the wrong person for it.
Kate September 1, 2018 at 1:32 pm Overall, I thought the show was not bad but I wasn’t impressed. I haven’t seen the 2001 Taiwanese version nor read the comics. I do think that the actors played their roles well. However, the problem was the lack of depth in the script.
Sometimes it was way over the top cheesy. I did enjoy several episodes of the series though like Shancai’s cooking competition, and when they spent their last date together in London. I was really hoping the series would end well too but the last few episodes were overloaded with too many flashbacks. September 4, 2018 at 9:52 pm I loved the show until the last 10 episodes, it seemed to drag out with relationship issues when we knew Si & Shancai were very committed. It was to far fetched with the fake kidnapping and starving scenes and I am so confused on the endingI don’t know if they really got married or not?? I feel it didn’t do justice to a great love story. I loved all the actors & stories except Xianyoushe was too childish & didnt seem to fit Xi.

Overall great show with a bad ending & a little too long. Ginny September 12, 2018 at 10:52 pm Shan Cai character’s feelings for Dao Ming Si has always been wishy washy throughout the entire drama. The original Taiwan version, Shan Cai never said “I liked you” until the very last episode lol. I don’t think it’s necessary to compare this version to the other versions. Each Meteor Garden has their own flavor and their own way of making the story. If it was all the same, it would be so boring to watch over and over again.
I felt the 2018 version is completely refreshing. Marg September 25, 2018 at 4:12 am I have seen the other three versions and I quite agree to say that this MG 2018 is more youthful, hence refreshing. As far as I can remember, this 2018 version shown its characters with more depth and development, more realistic. Where the other versions left some parts vague and cliffhangers, which left the viewers guessing, this remake provided a clear story of each character and each aspect on the lives of the lead characters. There is more closure to be able for us to understand the characters and whatever actions and decisions they’ve made in the story.
I especially like here the character development of Lei and Dao Ming Feng (Si’s mom). I believe the other versions have not portrayed them as human as they are here in the 2018 versions. MG 2018 is all about a young love and how it blossomed to be true and faithful against all odds. I think they’ve able to give it justice.

↓. rani saya selalu nonton meteor garden versi apapun dan tak pernah bosan.
Masing2 versi punya kekuatan cerita & chemistry sendiri. Saya suka tentang persahabatan mereka, bener2 sahabat sejati.
Hua Ze Lei yang pendiam, lembut & misterius, dia yang sering punya ide dlm mempersatukan A Si & San Chai. Yang paling bikin baper San chai & A Si menghabiskan waktu bersama sebelum berpisah di London trs dibawa ke pulau terpencil, ternyata kerjaannya F4 & Xiozi. Wuihh tatapan matanya Dylan Wang ga nguatinnnn.
